Its nickname is The Old River, perhaps because of its calm and lazy fl owing current that has no rapids. There are many preserved historical monuments alongside the river. To name a few: Karlštejn and Křivoklát Castles, the ruins of Libštejn, Krašov and Týřov. In the valley of the river there is a lot of nature reserves and parks, e.g. the Skryjská jezírka Lakes known for the discoveries of fossilized trilobites. Before it reaches Beroun the river fl ows through a limestone canyon of the Český Kras full of limestone mines, galleries, canyons and cave systems. The most famous mines are Malá and Velká Amerika, and Alkazar, and the Koněpruské Caves which represent the largest cave system in Bohemia.
